Acne is the most common skin condition. It is caused by the bacteria Propionibacterium aces (Paces in short). These bacteria live in our skin all the time. The bacteria creates a problem when a pore becomes blocked. The pore gets blocked when excess oil mixes with dead skin cells to form plug. Acne may be mild, moderate or severe. Severe acne can cause permanent scars. Acne can appear on the face, neck, back, chest, shoulders, upper arms and buttocks.
What is Acne?
It is a disorder that results from the disturbed action of hormones and other substances on the oil glands (sebaceous glands) of skin.
Who gets Acne?
Acne is common in young adults and adolescents. It can occur at any age. In most of the people, acne tends to go away by the time they reach their thirties.
What are the Causes of Acne?
The following are the common causes of acne:
• Hormonal changes in Adolescents
• Hormonal changes during pregnancy•
• Environmental factors such as dust, pollution or humidity
•Pressure from tight helmets, tight collars and tight sports uniforms
• Regular Scrubbing of skin
• Stress can also leads to acne
• Oil from skin products like moisturizers or cosmetics.
What are the Signs of acne?
The signs of acne are: blackheads, papules, whiteheads, pimples, cysts and nodules. The acne may results in low self-esteem, depression, dark spots on the skin and permanent scars.
What is the Effect of Diet on Acne?
In general, healthy and balanced diet supports overall health of the body. Healthy diet helps maintain healthy skin.
Acne and Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda, there are three doshas namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha. An imbalance in any of the dosha leads to one or the other disorder. In Ayurveda, oil produced by oil qlands is known as medas. Kapha dosha is dominant in meda while Vata is dominant in skin.
